WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Laser hair removal is a procedure by which a laser beam is aimed at the skin to remove hair and prevent it from growing back. When the laser hits melanin in the hair follicles, it generates a reaction that ultimately leads to destruction of the hair follicle. Over time and several treatments, hairs grow back increasingly finer, until they cease growing altogether. Since the laser acts on the melanin within the follicle, the treatment tends to be more effective on people whose hair is darker in pigment than their skin color. Newer laser technologies are currently able to address darker hair against darker skin, but still advisable to consult a skin specialist beforehand and ensure you’re a good candidate for the treatment.
WILL IT WORK ON MY SKIN TONE?
Previously only effective for removing dark hair from fair skin, laser hair removal can now work on all skin tones, thanks to advancements in laser technology. But it may not be as effective on those with gray or very light blonde hair, so you may want to discuss your treatment options with a trained professional if this is a concern for you.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?
Because laser hair removal works by targeting hair in its active growth stage and not all hair follicles will be actively growing at any one given moment, multiple sessions will be necessary. In order to treat all of the follicles in the target area, most patients usually require a series of 4 to 8 sessions. For more effective results, it is important to avoid excessive sun exposure throughout the entirety of your laser hair treatment. You can use a sunless tanning lotion to achieve that summer glow without spending time in the sun, but allow enough time for the self-tanner to fade prior to your next session.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Overall, the side effects of laser hair removal are nominal. Some less-common side effects include blistering as well as skin lightening or darkening, so it’s crucial to discuss any pre-existing conditions and habits with your practitioner beforehand.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
You should avoid topical creams and lotions that contain acids and retinoids for at least a week prior to your appointment, and ensure you haven’t had any waxing or plucking of the area for several months before. It is very important to also avoid sun bathing, as tanned skin might increase the risk of a laser burn. On the day of your laser session, you’ll need to shave the area to be treated down to the skin using a quality shaving cream to avoid razor burn. Finally, it is recommended not to work out before your appointment, as it can cause the body to retain heat which may make you extra-sensitive to the laser.
