FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A FACE LIFT?
Also known as Rhytidectomy, a facelift is a cosmetic surgery that aims to lift and pull back the skin to make the face tighter and smoother. It’s a procedure designed to reduce the sagging or flabby excess skin in the lower half of the face, mainly around your jowls and neck. A facelift can also be combined with other facial rejuvenation techniques, such as Blepharoplasty, or other non-surgical techniques such as Botox.
WHAT IS A MINIMAL (MINIMALLY INVASIVE) FACELIFT SURGERY?
The MACS-lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift) is a technique that only involves local anesthesia or twilight sedation to brush up drooping of the soft tissues and loosening of the skin in your face and the neck. This procedure will address jowls, neck, dropped cheeks, and skin through a small incision that stops at the bottom of the earlobe. There is no cut behind the ear, so unlike traditional facelift surgery techniques, the incision is smaller and produces no scarring behind the ear. It is recommended for relatively young patients - usually in their 40s - that have already benefited from fillers and laser procedures, but that need a more cost-effective and longer-lasting rejuvenation.
In this less invasive approach, the surgeon will tighten the muscle layer without dissecting it, trimming the excess skin and closing the incisions with fine plastic surgery sutures. With that, the visibility of any incisions is minimized and the recovery time is cut down from a few weeks to only a few days.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A FACELIFT?
So many different kinds of procedures vary according to your age, skin condition, and aesthetic goal. But, as an overall rule, the surgeon will work with incisions above your hairline at the temples that extend down in front of your ear, underneath your earlobe, and behind the ear. And, sometimes, additional tiny incisions right under your chin and jawline. Through these incisions, the surgeon will remove the surplus facial skin and pull the remaining skin backward and upwards before stitching it into its new position. At this point, if necessary, the surgeon can redistribute facial fat and tissue or even add some to your face. Finally, the incisions will be sutured and a bandage will be placed on your face to minimize bruising and swelling.
WHEN SHOULD I GET A FACE LIFT?
It is important to note that skin elasticity is one of the key factors in facelift timing. And timing is very important when it comes to cosmetic surgery. If you experience skin sagging and deeper folds appearing on the face you can always benefit from the surgery, but it is crucial that you still have sufficient skin elasticity to produce a good result out of it. That said, there is no perfect age for having a facelift. It is a personal decision since everyone ages differently and feels differently about aging. But as a rule of thumb, if you are already considering it in your 40s, you may not want to leave it till later.
HOW IS THE RECOVERY FROM A FACELIFT LIKE?
It varies significantly from patient to patient but it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to fully recover from a facelift. Since bruising is quite visible for at least 2 weeks, you should consider taking this time off work. You should also avoid showering or getting the bandages wet in the first 2 days. It is important to refrain from strenuous activity, saunas, and massages for at least 2 weeks. Following the operation, it is helpful to keep your head propped up with pillows for a couple of days while resting to reduce the swelling. For the minimal access facelift, the recovery is generally less painful and produces less swelling than more extensive facelifts.
IS HAVING A FACELIFT PAINFUL?
During the procedure, having had a general anesthetic, you’ll be asleep while the surgeon and clinical team perform the surgery and won’t feel a thing. In the first couple of days, you can expect mild to moderate pain and having drainage placed where the incisions were done. Following the surgery, your doctor will prescribe painkillers taking into account your level of pain and discomfort. All aching should slow down as you recover. Your doctor or staff will check on you in the process to assure that your healing and well-being are progressing accordingly.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO HAVE A FACE LIFT?
The overall cost of a facelift can vary depending on the extent of your procedure. Book a complimentary consultation to discuss your case.
